He Made It Happen!

Oh how I wanted to at least try! I watched while reminiscing about how good it used to feel.

Before I had my children, when I weighed only 102 pounds, I was able to squat 120 pounds. It was my favorite exercise.
Recovering my health and body strength has been an ongoing work in progress. You already know about my weightloss journey, and I am still 130 pounds lighter than I found myself after giving birth to 10 children, however, I still have a ways to go and am diligently making my way.

In 2006, I injured my right shoulder. Seven muscles were shattered in that shoulder. Being unable to get the necessary surgery to repair the injury, my body has learned to compensate and I have accepted the limited range of motion on that side. It was impossible to put the barbell over my shoulders as the injured arm couldn't grip the bar and it would release and swing around and clop whoever was standing on the other side in the back of the head.

When I watch others do squats, I so wish I could do them too. Since joining Crossfit, the desire to do the squats has only gotten stronger. Modification is necessary to work with the injury to the shoulder, but the other night, I asked the trainer if I could just try to do the squats.

Curious if they made some kind of wrist band that could hold the bar for me, as my hand cannot go back to hold the barbell on the injured side ; I asked the trainer as he was setting me up with a modification, if he could figure out a way to make it happen to do the squats and asked if I might just try. He was so awesome and he rigged me up with a solution.

YES! It felt so good to squat again! I only did 55 pounds to start, but was able to do 70 whole, full, glorious repititions. Oh! It felt so good. I asked if there were some kind of handle or strap that would enable my hand to hold the bar within my range of motion. He listened, heard and he set me up with a safe solution that did not compromise form, yet facilitated success. Thank you David Reiman, you are an awesome trainer. I can whole-heartedly recommend the Grizzly Crossfit at MTA Sports Center. Contrary to the popular beliefs about Crossfit, these trainers are unwilling to compromise form and proper technique. They have been careful, thoughtful and sticklers for proper form in each exercise.

As we age, simple things such as sitting down, getting onto the toilet, climbing stairs etc, can present serious challenges. Remaining active is the key to functionality. Take good care of yourself and remain active. My goal is to continue losing weight until I reach my goal weight of 135. However, my FOCUS is not on losing weight. My FOCUS is on my health and functionality. Do not sell yourself short. EXERCISE, it is the key to remaining active.
