Howdy! Recently, I had a very good discussion with a friend of mine. She was telling me about how hard it is for her, now that she is in her fifties, to get around and do the things she used to love to do. Even the 'little' things are difficult for her these days.
"Do not let body-building intimidate you!"
She remarked about how young I seem to be and asked how is it possible that I have ten-children? That is when I explained to her how I stay young. So, I will share that with you now. Though I am not yet where I want to be physically, I have gained back most of my functionality and I can say to you with confidence, that I shall gain it all back, even with the battle scars I bear in my structure.
As a young girl, a young man which lived across the hall from me, got me into bodybuilding. Every morning, my favorite thing to do was to greet the morning sunrise by running towards it religiously between 4:30 and 5:30 at the 'crack of dawn.' He also loved to run, so often times, we would "run into" one another. Polite greetings were exchanged for a while until it became part of our routine to look for each other.
Eventually we began running together and ultimately, dating. He was a blackbelt in Kempo and extremely handsome. In those days, it was not common for women to join the gym. He was a member of Gold's Gym and I was young enough to just follow without realizing I was doing something that other women were intimidated by.
The only two women at that gym, were myself and the gym owner's girlfriend. Once inside, this young man introduced me to a trainer. At that point, I was a long distance runner and at the end of each run, I sprinted to burn it out. Usually, I beat this young man, hence he told this trainer to work with me and take me under his wing. He did so and wow! Did he open a whole new world to my understanding.
"Do not let body-building intimidate you!"
I got started and found that it was wonderful! Over the years, my personal ME time went into the shelf as I gave my life to my children. My body and health deteriorated to a horrible degree. One day, as I was turning a corner in my van full of children, my body flopped over and we all laughed, but it woke me up that my very functionality was seriously compromised. Though I was not at all inactive, I had not paid attention to my own body's needs. Being the mother of so many children, and giving birth so many times, though there was massive, indescribable "busy-ness" to my life, none of it was helpful to maintain my strength and well-being.
We tend to think that people who are deteriorated are that way due to "inactivity", or laziness. Well, I can tell you first hand, that is not necessarily the case. Our lifestyle routines prevent us from focusing on OUR personal needs, unless, we schedule into our daily grind personal FOCUS ON ME - time.
Bodybuilding is an activity. It does not mean you will look all bulky like what my son calls a "bean man." Body Building, is exactly that. You are building YOUR body. The house you live in til death. You can live in it and fully function or you can merely exist in it and be held captive by your limitations. The choice is fully up to YOU.
