In America, we have chosen to institutionalize education. The schools across our country are organized around mob control. Many moments in the days of our children, are spent organizing the movement of that mob from classroom to classroom during the developmental years of American children.
In between that movement through the corridors of our institutions, we sit them in desks like this:
Young developing children need to run and play, climb trees, hear the birds, smell the fresh morning breeze. They need to feel the wind on their face, and connect with life around them. There is a time for everything under the heavens, a time to read, learn and write. However, American schools have set the precedent that learning is primarily information forced upon the child with career readiness as the end goal.
Individuality is getting crushed under the weight of programming children to get a job. Preparing them for a career.
The pilgrims did not sail across the ocean to get a job.
Each of us is an individual as God created us to be. We all have differing interests and gifts to offer our fellow man. Life happens once. Children become men and women. The content of those men and women is woven into them during that childhood. Programming our children, is not working. Let us take the time to love them, nurture them, listen to them and learn with them. Discover who our children are, what gifts and talents does each one possess? How can we assist them on their learning journey?
Consider James Watt.As a boy, his health suffered to the point that he was unable to attend school with his peers. He received his education at home. Oftentimes when the tea kettle began to sing releasing its steam, James was caught holding a spoon over the blast of steam as it screamed through that tiny hole. He would observe as that steam cloud when caught by the surface of the spoon, returned to its original state of water and would drip from the spoon. Analysis and observation dwelt in that tiny head of his.
His mother taught James to read and write. She was a wise woman who knew not to interfere with the learning process of a child, but rather, to support it. His father, taught him math and science and between them, provided James with the foundation of learning which eventually led to the Industrial Revolution. In all of James' dawdling with that steam, he learned how to efficiently harness the use of steam and how to correct the errors which existed in its use to power various machinery.
Education as defined by Noah Webster in 1828 says the following:
EDUCA'TION, n. [Latin educatio.] The bringing up, as of a child, instruction; formation of manners. education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.
Definition of Education according to Wikipedia:
Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include storytelling, discussion, teaching, training, and directed research.
Compare the two examples above. Is there any question that the paradigm of learning has seriously deteriorated? Notice the Wikipedia definition is dictated information moving towards the child, and not necessarily sought out BY the child. It boils down to programming.

Children who are read too, gain a higher IQ. Though we educate at home, our society has lessened the amount of time we can actually spend reading a good book to our children. One of our favorite activities as I was educating my children in the home, was to listen to an audio book, and each of us illustrate it while we listened. My children loved that time together. I lit a fire in the stove and popped in a book and we illustrated away listening to the fire crackle.
